Straight RF, LLC is an independent RF and microwave engineering consultancy located in San Jose, California. The company provides specialized engineering support for defined projects, difficult technical problems, and organizations needing additional senior-level expertise.

David A. Straight

Straight RF is led by David A. Straight, an electrical engineer with approximately 30 years of experience in RF and microwave circuit design, electromagnetic simulation, radio-system architecture, and high-frequency product development.

David’s experience extends from circuit-level analysis and design through physical implementation and system-level decision-making. He has developed RF and microwave circuitry at frequencies extending to 80 GHz using printed-circuit-board, thin-film, and RFIC technologies.

RF and Microwave Experience

Technical experience includes filters, amplifiers, oscillators, mixers, couplers, matching networks, frequency synthesizers, transceivers, passive structures, and small antennas. David has particular experience designing microwave filters and applying electromagnetic simulation to structures whose performance is strongly influenced by physical layout and parasitic behavior.

Electromagnetic Simulation

David has worked with electromagnetic simulation tools since the late 1990s and owns Sonnet Software for planar EM analysis. His experience also includes Ansys HFSS, Maxwell 3D, Q3D, CST, and other circuit and electromagnetic design tools.

EM simulation is used as an engineering tool—not simply as a software service—to understand performance, compare design alternatives, identify risks, and guide practical circuit implementation.

System and Product Development

David’s background includes the architecture and development of point-to-point microwave radio systems, RF and microwave transceivers, and products requiring close coordination between electrical design, mechanical constraints, PCB implementation, and manufacturing.

Straight RF can support an existing engineering team, perform an independent technical review, or assume responsibility for a defined portion of a development program.

Engineering Leadership

In addition to individual technical work, David has managed engineers, technicians, and assemblers as direct reports. This experience supports effective communication across engineering, prototype development, manufacturing, management, and external suppliers.

Through Straight RF, David works directly with clients and can contribute independently without requiring extensive supervision or organizational overhead.

Education

David earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
